2003 Server Questions asked

Open Question: how do i get into a password protected computer at work?

I know with Windows XP you can hit F8 while the computer is starting up and log in to administrator in safe mode and change the users password. They recently fired a guy and I use his computer and I had to get into that way. However, there's this old-as-dirt computer that I believe has Windows 2003 on it, and when you turn it on, it asks you to press ctrl+alt+delete and then prompts you for a password. I tried hitting F8 before the computer turned on, and nothing happened. I tried again and held F8 down and it just beeped. People come to me with computer questions a lot, and they asked me to fix it and I assumed I could because I thought the computer would have XP on it, but it doesn't. Does anyone know how to bypass this? No one knows the password. It says "Windows Server 2003 R2" on the "control/alt/delete to begin" screen. That's about all I know about it. Thanks so much. more

Voting Question: Remote Desktop Connection (RDP), 32-bit color and audio?

Hi, I'm trying to get RDP to work from a client Win XP SP2 to a server Win 2003 R2. Both systems have 32-bit color configured, I've enabled 32-bit color in the RDP client settings but I'm still only getting 16-bit. My Video card has 512MB of RAM - plenty of memory to handle both desktops. Similarly (and maybe related) when I click an audio file on the remote desktop I don't hear the audio on the client, even though I've chosen 'bring to this computer' in the remote audio settings. Suggestions/solutions would be greatly appreciated!! more

Voting Question: Why can I access Sharepoint server and not Project server?

I am currently running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise from home. I have installed Sharepoint server and project server 2007. While I can access sharepoint server from the web I cannot access the project server. I am able to access both sharepoint server and project server from the internal LAN. (I am not trying to run these servers full time, just as a proof of concept.) Setup: Router 10.1.1.1 which is forwarding needed ports to server 10.1.1.2 (8080,443,444, etc) Server with IP of 10.1.1.2 I have configured IIS sharepoint website with alternate port of 8080 since my ISP blocks port 80. I have setup CA. I have installed certificate chain from the CA on my LAN computer. I can access both servers from the LAN using http://10.1.1.2/pages/default.aspx and http://10.1.1.2/projectserver. When I access http://71.178.195.119:8080/pages/default.aspx I get the prompt for domain login and I can login and access sharepoint server. When I try accessing http://71.178.195.119:8080/projectserver the domain login prompt..then I get nothing. No error, just the standard Internet Explorer cannot display this page. Any ideas?Yes I know I really put my IP in there...but its a DHCP IP, and the website requires you to login so problems with HACKING it. more

Voting Question: DNS Forwarding Question?

On Windows Server 2003 how do you alter where it takes you when a lookup fails. For instance at the moment if i were to type in a bogus url in my browser it automatically forwards me to my company's website while the address bar will still display what I typed in, almost as if that bogus junk I typed in actually resolved to our site. How/Where do i change that so that I can make those bogus entries instead forward to like a search engine or something.I don't know if it is though, this happens even to newly rebuilt machines from any browser that we install without touching any of their defaults. more

Voting Question: How do I run windows update on all of the network?

I am running windows server 2003 at the office. The computers do not log on to the network but are all sharing information. I am going to keep it this way. I was wondering what I would need to do to make it possible to run updates and windows security patches on all these machines from the server."However, if you want full control over what computer gets what upgrade and want it centralized you will need a server running and create a domain that they all belong to" If I did this would I have to make their computers log on to the domain assigned? more

Resolved Question: What is the most cost effective way to deliver IE6 & IE7 testing to multiple users through remote software?

I have several users who are working on Macs that need to connect to Windows machines for the sole purpose of website compatibility checking with IE6 and IE7. I need a way to deliver the software to users simultaneously while minimizing the hardware and software costs. Since users need to simultaneously access the software, my current solution is to have two Windows 2003 Servers with 5 or 10 CAL licenses each. One server would have IE6 and the other IE7. I am unsure of what the hardware requirements would be for a server that needs to support 5-10 simultaneous remote desktop connections. Any better alternatives?Client side virtualization is not an option as it would require two virtual machines and Windows licenses for each computer. more

and If u`ve tried windows server 2008, how much is it different than windows server 2003?I need to use the one that uses least system resources... I`m not even intrested in networking.. but I put windows server in consideration because its more stable (I guess) than xp (I`m talking about 64 bit OSes)... and because it uses less resources than Vista (still talking about 64 bit OSes).. so, now, which of the two uses less resources? server 2003 or xp? more

Voting Question: Group Policy Objects on Windows Server 2003 doesn't work?

Ok, I have a Windows Server 2003 with 2 windows XP Pro SP2 Clients. I have 1 OU in the Active Directory for "Restricted Users". These users are not allowed access to the control panel, or the display settings, etc. I used the Group Policy Management Console to create a GPO in the Restricted Users OU for all their restrictions. I have in that OU, the Restricted Group as well as all the restricted users. I have removed Domain Users from the users's membership and set the group "Restricted Users" as the primary, and only, group. I have the GPO set to Enabled and Enforced. The Default Domain Policy (one level up the Active Directory Heiarchy) is set to disabled and not enforced. All this to say that when I log in as a restricted user on my client computers, neither one will apply the GPO. The restricted users can still access the control panel and all the other things I restricted access to in the GPO. It is really starting to annoy me and I have no idea why it is not working. At first I thought it could have been my network setup. I have a wireless router (Belkin N Wireless Router) and a Linksys Hardwired Network Hub (5 ports + uplink port). I have my server linked hardwired to the network hub. I have one client hardwired to the network hub. I have a patch cable from the network hub to one of 4 ports on the back of the wireless router that way the wireless client (the other one) could access the server. I have the internet cable (from modem) running to the internet port in the back of the wireless router. All the clients can get internet, although sometimes the wireless client decides not to work (internet-wise). But when eliminated the wireless router from the equation and just had one client and the server (with no internet) wired to the network hub, that way just those two computers would communicate, the GPO still wasn't applied. I think I should also mention that the wireless router also has DHCP enabled and so does the server. So I thought that could have been the problem, but again, when I eliminated the wireless router from the scenario, the GPO still wasn't applied. I desperately need help, I am running out of ideas. If you need more details, please ask so I can solve this problem. Thank you very much for your time! It is greatly appreciated! more
