Open Question: Trying to get rid of Av2010 virus?

My brother called me frantic one night because this thing popped up on his computer saying he was infected with av2010 virus. We tried to close it and delete it but nothing happened. It has slowed his system down and basically locked it up . Now normally my first suggestion would be to just format his computer but he has so many work documents and pictures ( he works in repairing houses ) on his computer that it would take forever and a day to fix this. Open Question: HELP: Computer virus, spyware and firewall protection desperately required!?

I have a new Toshiba laptop which I got for Christmas and the preinstalled McAfee Internet Security 2008's trial is soon to have run out, so I need to find potential replacements to compensate for it's firewall protection, spyware and virus protection, email scanner etc. On my desktop I have AVG Free 8.0 but I know full well that it is shit. The virus vault works superbly at nullifying infections, but its detection rates and removal success rates were staggeringly poor even when compared to the likes of Ad-Aware Free 2008, and more notably, Spyware Doctor with Antivirus v6 (2009), when I recently had bad virus problems. But Spyware Doctor and AVG were competing with other and thus freezing my computer, so my Dad got rid of Spyware Doctor, and kept Ad-Aware as a secondary program as it doesn't have real-time protection to conflict with AVG's. But now a new laptop is on the scene, and it's mine, so I make the decisions, and I know I won't feel particularly secure with AVG Free and Windows Firewall. So, with a little help from you guys... Hopefully I can find the ultimate solution! OK, so two things I'm definitely going to install are: Ashampoo Magical Defrag v2.34 McAfee Site Advisor Firefox/IE Plug-in And now for the much more comprehensive stuff. I may only be 16, but I do know my stuff and thus would like advanced protection, without having to get a full Internet Security suite. I would like a personal firewall program to replace Windows Firewall, the best individual Spyware program and the best individual Virus program... All with nice interfaces. I got this pop up in my tray saying i've been infected but the program thats alerting me is a fake Spyware Protect 2009 thats downloaded itself in my computer. I can't clean it myself because i could kill my PC because of the tricky removal process. Open Question: Stupid Antivirus 2009 (I think)?

I'm aware of the evil program "Antivirus 2009". Recently, I went to a website looking up some stuff on Vince McMahon (it's not important), and the website I clicked on looked really shady, so I got out of it right away. Not much longer after that, this thing came up that said "Spyware can destroy your computer!" etc, etc. "Would you like to Install Antivirus 2009?" I clicked "Cancel", and this Ad for "Antivirus 2009" popped up. I immediately exited out. I was cruising along with no other problems, until all the sudden a random page popped up and said stuff about "DEPPRESSION IN AMERICA!". It looked very similar to the previous Antivirus 2009 page, so I exited out. I ran scans with my SpyBot: Search and Destroy program, along with my antivirus software. They cleared out the very few issues that my pc had. After they were clean, though, the "Deppression in america" ad popped up again. What should I do here? Open Question: WTF is wrong with my computer?

I thought my computer was totally safe because I had all this antivirus and anti spyware programs always on guard, and I was using Firefox, which I thought was safe. Sure, my programs are outdated, but they haven't failed me in years. Maybe it's a file I downloaded or a website I visited... What happens is that my computer spontaneously freezes when starting up, or during random intervals. Either I'm 10 minutes or 45 minutes into web browsing, and my computer just stops working. It's not even a "not responding" error, but my mouse even freezes. I can't do anything except manually shut off my laptop. The only way I can safely operate is using it in Safe Mode with Networking. But I cannot deal with this permanently. When I try to install antivirus and antispyware programs, half of them won't even allow them to install using safe mode, and out of those that are able to install, only half of THOSE are able to function properly because the others constantly check for updates they are not able to receive. I used Avira AntiVirus and a-squared which detected upto 50 or so viruses or suspicious files. I had them all quarantined and then deleted. The odd thing is that when I first used Avira AntiVirus, I had the files quarantined and deleted, and then when I ran a-squared, the same or another 50 or so files came up that I just deleted. When I tried to run Windows XP normally, my laptop froze once again within 5 minutes of operating and starting up it's normal programs. What are some FREE anti virus and anti spyware/malware programs I can try out before I completely give up hope? I'm opting for a Mac when college comes around...I know that much for sure.And whenever I try to watch videos on some websites, I get this message: Your computer generates an attacking DOS requests at our servers caused by the spyware/virus named 'Troj/Rustok-N' Which led me to install AND UNINSTALL Winiguard. Even when I uninstalled it, I get popups to install it again. Am I in danger of identity theft if I just stop using this computer or continue using it without doing anything? I have never entered credit card info recently but I do use my Amazon seller's account to sell items on the site, which has my bank account registered with them.How long does it typically take to reinstall Windows XP? I think that's the best option, but the thing is I have so many files I cannot back up on a little 4gb usb stick and if this is time consuming I cannot do it anytime soon. I have about 10 gigs of music, plus there's also videos, pictures, internet favorites, etc. How can I even back up internet favorites? You know what would be easy, if someone gave me a tutorial of how to reinstall XP. more

Open Question: Why won't my programs shut down completely in Vista?

I have several programs (Firefox, Bittorrent, etc.) that will freeze up, close when I exit the program, but continue to run in the background. When I try to shut down the program completely through task manager's processes tab, it won't shut down. It stays there and sits, for example, on 12,280 K and 0% CPU. And if I try to open the program again, I get a message box saying that the program is all ready running, close it out, and try to open it again. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, virus and spyware scans, and defragmenting. My specs: Vista Home Premium SP1 2 GB RAM AMD 64 Athlon X2 32-bit OS HELP!!!!!!!! more

I've got this virus on my com.... I know because whenever i double click any of my drives, it says: "C:\resycled\boot.com is not a valid Win32 application" So I've been trying to get rid of it by scanning my com but when i try to scan, it says that there's an error and I cant scan.... and when I try to update my antivirus it says update failed. I have burning software (Roxio) that will allow me to do a backup on CDs or DVDs but if i did so, would the problem be transferred over onto those discs? Would I be better served just to manually save files i specifically want and programs i know are OK? What should I do here? Please help! more

I had Mcafee Security suite for about 2 years fine, then it said It could not update..I tried to fix the problem and nothing happened? So then I installed Avira free. Right when I installed it I tried to update and It wouldn't?? It said Connection faIled though My internet was working fine. I went to check my security status on control panel(I have a Vista) and It said Comodo and Norton was running and up to date?? I installed Comodo and uninstalled it the next day! How is it there?? Also I never installed Norton on my system? Then for spyware it said Norton and Defence plus from comodo was running?? I have neither of those programs ...I checked the "uninstall a program" thing and the "start menu"! None of them were theyre? Why cant I update and why are all these false programs showing up?? I am trying to delete Antivirus 2009 from y compter (though I haven't downloaded it it just makes pop-ups and tries to make me download and it still pops up for a week now and its slowing down my computer) and on http://fix-computer-problem.com/rogue-antispyware/antivirus2009/antivirus2009.html says to delete files shlwapi.dll and wininet.dll because they are Antivrus 2009. But it won't let m and I think they are essential startup files for Windows XP. But the files say they were downloaded on 2006/2007 but the vrirus showed up like a week ago Please help I don't know what I need to do. Should I use malwarebytes or Spyware Hunter? I havn't downladed Antivirus 2009 it just pops up and tries to make me go with its program, but I won't so it keeps popping up and is slowing down my computer.
